For Samantha Peña, construction isn’t just a career—it’s a lifelong passion rooted in childhood experiences. Growing up, she spent summers alongside her father, learning everything from roofing to repairing farm equipment. He instilled in her a deep appreciation for self-reliance and problem solving. That early foundation set the stage for a career spanning nearly two decades in the construction equipment industry.
With 13 years of experience in sales and six years dedicated to rental construction equipment, Samantha now serves as the Preventative Maintenance Manager and Manager of Central Field Service Dispatch at Texas First Rentals. In an industry that is constantly evolving, she thrives on the ever-changing nature of her role. “I love working at Texas First Rentals because it's ever-changing,” she says, embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with keeping equipment running efficiently and customers’ projects on track.
Samantha credits her growth to the mentorship and support she has received throughout her career. Leaders such as David Caverly, Lisa Aubry, and Mike Ryan played pivotal roles in believing in her potential and guiding her along the way. Their encouragement helped her navigate the complexities of the industry and develop the leadership skills that define her success today.
One of the biggest misconceptions she hopes to break is the outdated notion that women don’t understand construction equipment. “I have had the privilege to work with many women in the industry who have a wealth of knowledge,” she shares. Her experience proves that expertise isn’t determined by gender but by passion, dedication, and hands-on experience.
When asked what it takes to succeed in this industry, Samantha emphasizes teamwork, strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. “Working well with your team and being able to navigate challenges efficiently is crucial,” she explains. Her ability to foster collaboration and drive solutions has been key to her success in the fast-paced world of equipment maintenance and service dispatch.
For Samantha, Women in Construction Week is a time to reflect on how far women have come in the industry while inspiring the next generation to push forward. “I hope to inspire the next generation to not be afraid or discouraged to pursue a career in construction. It’s a tough but rewarding industry to work in,” she says. Her story is a testament to the impact women continue to make in construction, proving that skill, knowledge, and determination know no boundaries.
